For 30 years, Grupo Esencia has kept the rhythms, stories, and spirit of Puerto Rico moving, and now they’re bringing that milestone celebration to the Hostos Center stage!

Hailing from La Cuarta in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Grupo Esencia has built its unmistakable sound by bringing together the powerful rhythms of bomba and plena with the irresistible swing of salsa. The result? Music rich in Afro-Caribbean tradition, Puerto Rican pride, and plenty of sabrosura.

The Latin Grammy-nominated ensemble has spent three decades performing and recording its signature sound for audiences around the world. In 2022, the group released its seventh album, El Tren de la Sabrosura, which earned Best Album of the Year honors from Puerto Rico’s Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular.

Now, it’s time to celebrate 30 years of music, rhythm, culture, and community. Come ready to dance because Grupo Esencia is bringing Ponce to the Bronx!

Ángel “Papote” Alvarado is a percussionist, composer and singer from the historic La Cuarta neighborhood in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He is the director and founder of the musical group Grupo Esencia, as well as a cultural manager and the current organizer of the Festival Afro Caribeño del Barrio La Cuarta.
